Queen Sophie

Queen Sophie of Mecklenburg was only 14 years old, when she came to Denmark in1572 and married King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway, who was 37 years old.

Together, they had seven children, including the famous Christian IV. Under Frederick and Sophie’s reign, the castle Kronborg was transformed from a medieval fortress into one of Europe’s most stunning Renaissance castles. Sophie proved early on to be far more than a queen and mother. She was intelligent and economically savvy and when she died I 1631, she was one of the wealthiest individuals in all of Northern Europe.
